RAF Wittering's Mark Day has ordered several Vodka Luges from us over the years for their Summer and Winter Balls. This year Mark wanted something a bit more special, slightly different to what they have had in the past for their RAF 100 Warrant Officer and Sargeants Mess celebration Ball. Mark was very specific in what he wanted (as he always is). He wanted the RAF Swooping Eagle crest. Mark loves to throw is a challenge.
With a high resolution image of the RAF Swooping Eagle crest we set about planning and designing the ice carving.
The crest fitted a Landscape format of an ice block - 1m from left to right and 1/2m high. Ice carving is all about pre-visualization of the final image. The perspective must be just right, the dimensions accurate, be it judged by eye or by meticulous measuring by a tape measure.
Taking a 2D image such as the RAF Swooping Eagle Crest or logo and then translating that into a 3D version is not the easiest of things to do. Looking at a finished sculpture, anyone one can spot a mistake, an error or a wrong dimension. However when a piece is carved 'just right' it then becomes a work of art and something really special. It then comes alive.
With the RAF Swooping Eagle Vodka Luge everything worked. The detail was carefully planned prior to he first chisel touching the ice, close attention to how the feathers lay, the angle of he head, the subtle nuances of the crest features such as the eyes, the claws and the actual pose were all taken into account.
RAF Swooping Eagle - Hand carved- not CNC carved
This RAF Swooping Eagle was hand carved - not CNC carved as we would for a crest or cap badge. We love challenges. When everything works as we planned it, this gives us tremendous satisfaction and pride in what we do.
When we set-up the RAF Swooping Eagle Vodka Luge, the reaction from those around was truly amazing and pleasing. People took photographs and exclaimed how 'spectacular', 'amazing' and 'brilliant' the sculpture was - one of the best they have ever seen at RAF Wittering one person commented. Comments like that make it all worth while.
Other RAF100 sculptures this year have included for example, the famous Spitfire.
Ice Shot Glasses
To really make any Ball, party or event memorable and to complete the Vodka Luge, Ice Shot Glasses are the 'glasses' of choice. Ice frozen into the shape of glass shot glasses. The idea of a Vodka Luge is to experience alcohol in a new way - really, really cold. We know this is not always possible at a party where bottles of drink tend to be at ambient temperature; hence we make shot glasses of ice.
First pouring the alcohol of choice into an ice shot glass (around 2oz) then pouring the contents of the shot glass through the luge will begin to cool down the alcohol rapidly. The channel of the Vodka Luge tends to be around 40 - 50cm in length.
To complete the cooling and experience, the guest catches the drink in another ice shot glass held at the exist point of the Vodka Luge. By the time the drink hits the second Ice Shot Glass, the alcohol should be nice and cold. The guest then knocks the whole shot glass contents back in one go; no stopping or hesitation. One smooth process. The sensation of the cold drink is simply amazing.
First the flavour of the drink (be it a flavoured Vodka such as Honey, Caramel, Lemon, Raspberry) can be initially tasted. As one swallows, the alcohol heats up in the back of the throat. The experience is complete. A different and new way to taste alcohol.
Once tried this way, you'll never go back to pouring alcohol into glass shot glasses again!
