Spitfire - Vertical

Spitfire Vodka Luge from Passion for Ice

For the Defence Academy's themed Ball - "Battle of Britain" Stef telephoned us (as we have supplied the JSCSC  - MOD Shrivenham with many, many luges over the years) for ideas and what we would create for their important Ball.  With "RAF100" being the top theme for the RAF in 2018, we suggested a "Spitfire".  After giving Stef a number of format options and design options, he plumped for a one and a half ice block Spitfire carved in a Vertical format - reaching for the sky.  This Vodka Luge Spitfire stood just over 1m tall and had a large wing span of 1m.

When Stef first saw the Spitfire unveiled and set-up - it literally took his breath away, 'wow, that is big and impressive' he said.  Immediately, others helping setting up the Ball came over to 'have a look' and take pictures (on mobile phones of course!)

Spitfire - In Just the right place

Placed just outside the doors to their main dining hall in Kitchener Hall and draped with Union flags, flight charts on the table, this was a perfect setting.  It set the tone, looked impressive and was set to be the major talking point of the evening. Everyone walking in to the dining hall could not miss this large and inspiring sculpture.

We used one and a half ice blocks to create it.  A full ice block was used for the horizontal wing span, and the extra half ice block for the tail plane and support to the Spitfire.  At the venue, we assembled the two parts on site.  Carving and fusing the two sections 'back-at-base' would have been possible, but the sheer weight of the total piece would have made it incredibly difficult to transport in a freezer van and to put into place on the day.  The combined sections would have weighed around 20-stone.

We created it as a single channel Vodka Luge.  The fun was to take place after their meal. We lit the sculpture using the technique of refraction - placing bright white LED lights behind the Luge and at the right angle for the light to bend and refract up and into the sculpture.  When the main lights were off or set to low, the lighting would have made the Spitfire come alive, sparkle and be an amazing sight.
