Apache Military Helicopter Vodka Luge
Wattisham Airfield (military base near Ipswich) flies Apache Helicopters. For their summer Ball they wanted a facsimile of one of their fighter Apache helicopters made as a Vodka Luge. The technical name for the Apache is - The Boeing AH-64; a twin-engine attack helicopter. The real Apache Helicopter is 18m long and has a wingspan of 15m. Our ice blocks measure 1m by 1/2m.
The Apache Vodka Luge is a complicated piece to make. It cannot be made in or from just one ice block. The four rotor blades cannot be carved as long individual rotor blades - they would simply melt very fast and 'fall-off'. As a result we have to use a bit of artistic license and create them as a 'swirl' as if they were rotating. Same with the tail blades
It is a relatively detailed Vodka Luge and thus will not physically last as long as a more chunky or bold Vodka Luge design. This Vodka Luge was designed solely as a centre piece, a spectacular show-stopper Vodka Luge. Due to its overall size it is not possible to show or carve every detail as on the original; all we could do is give an overall impression of the Apache helicopter. The typical weaponry consists of Hellfire Missiles (which we made a replica Vodka Luge of one for them the previous year) and Rocket Pods. Due to their size, we could not show the detail.
Because of the detail in this Vodka Luge, we would strongly suggest placing it in a very cool area (cool as in cold...) In a very warm to hot environment/room the intricate detail will melt first.
