Hare

For the fourth year in a row, Lizzie from the Hunt Staff Benefit Society contacted us regarding the "Dubarry Horn and Hunt Ball" she was once again organizing. The Ball was set to take place at The Cheltenham Racecourse. Each year Lizzie knows exactly what she wants.  She simply said this year, "Chris, we'd like a Hare carved".  And that was that.  With chainsaw in hand, we carved a 1m tall by 1/2m wide "sitting Hare". We delivered it on time to the rapturous delight of the Sponsor Nick Jenkins.  Placed in a prominent position it took centre stage and was a real show-stopper!

Transporting
We can (within reason) carve just about anything.  However, carving is one thing, transporting the delicate sculpture can be another matter.  With the "Hare" Vodka Luge, the delicate part was his ears.  The slightest knock could have caused him to be ear-less!  Packing and securing the sculpture in the freezer van is always a priority to get right.

Another aspect we have to think about, if creating a Vodka Luge, is where to physically drill the channel. With the Hare, there was not enough 'drop' to have the exit through his mouth. We decided the best place to start (the entrance) was at the top of his neck and exit around his chest on the front. This gave enough distance as a run for the Aqua Vita to flow through the ice.  It is always easy to make a short run, but long ones need more thinking about and planning. We always need to be aware of the thickness of the ice.  We cannot drill through weak or thin ice as the channel would quickly collapse making the Vodka Luge inoperable.  Everything in ice is some sort of compromise.

Luge of the week

The Classic Ski Jump  is an elegant and beautiful sexy design; a good angle of attack for the drink to bolt down the ski run, one or two surface channels and standing around 80-100cm high. Phenomenal.  A GREAT functional and time-less shape. Don't wait for the Winter Olympics - this is a Luge for all seasons and every year. If you are a party-loving person and love to set the perfect…
