Created for a sophisticated Cocktail party at a private address in the exclusive Barnt Green area of south Birmingham, the Bull's Head was the centre of attraction - and certainly turned a lot of heads.
Standing 1m high and just over 1/2m wide - and weighing in the order of 14-stone, this was a very powerful and riveting Vodka Luge to look at. In order to achieve the splay of the horns, a top section of ice was in effect taken or sliced-off before the main sculpting took place; the cut-off ice block then rotated 90 degrees on main ice torso and then finally the horns were carved. This gave extra width to the whole structure; it made the bull look 'normal' and how one would expect to see a bull. A bull's horns are naturally wider than its body. Keeping within the confines of an ice block (qm x 1/2m) would have meant his physical head being smaller. We used this 'trick' to use the full block.
The Bull's Head Vodka Luge was as 'big' as we could physically make it using one ice block. The whole design was based around making a 'bust' of the Bull - hence the two sections of the sculpture - the 'Head' and the 'ice plinth' section below. This adds 'power' and importance to the whole carving. The opposite would have been to carve an elongated neck and then not using the full height of the ice block.
Creating any ice sculpture or Vodka luge takes a lot of thought and mental planning; that is, how best to use the complete ice block and portray the subject.
