The Torah tells of a special seven-branch menorah that was lit every day in the Mishka - a portable temple used by Jews on their way to the Holy Land.
Over the centuries it has become an icon for Jewish culture and faith. For thousands of years, images of eight branches have been prevelent in Jewish art, architecture and culture.
The original Temple version only had seven branches.
Why eight as we see today?
The version we see today is not the representation of the Temple Menorah but of a special Chanukah Menorah. Chanukah celebrates the mircacle of the Temple's seven-branched version burning for eight days.
It is very special to Jews at Chanukah. There is a set way of lighting.
It brings light into the home; placed on a window cill it radiates into the street. The symbol is of spreading goodness and kindness all around; transforming the outside world and weakening the spiritual darkness that abounds.
Ice Menorah's are used at bigger family and friends gatherings, public events and those that want to really celebrate Chankah in a special way. The ice sculpture will be 1m wide and 1/2m high - this is impressive and spectacular. Each day a candle can be lit in the normal way of domestic versions.
Every Jewish house will have a Menorah at Chanukah. An ice sculpture version is something very special, something wonderful promoting light in the coldness around.
