Charles from Harris Manchester College Oxford called and asked if we could carve anything along the 'Circus and Fairground' theme for their Oxford May Ball taking place in the grounds of Harris Manchester College in the heart of Oxford? We sent him various images and ideas of what we have done in the past and what we could carve for him based on the theme. After a number of discussions and e-mails Charles decided upon the head or bust of an elephant.
The elephant carved stood a massive 1m tall and 1/2m wide. The design of this elephant is 'one sided'. The African elephant-size-ear and trunk being the main focal points. The tusks were as long as the ice block dimensions would dictate. As we set the Luge up in their quadrant, it garnered many, many compliments as well as 'ooohs' and 'aarhs!' (and - 'that is amazing'!)
The carving is a modern take on an African Elephant and is minimalist - designed to be viewed from the front as the 'back-half' is not carved. If we had wanted a 360 degree carving in this shape and format, we would have had to use 2-ice blocks. The Luge channel was drilled from the top of the carving to exit at the back of his head. This is a stunning and thoroughly modern carving executed by a Master Carver. The trunk is cleverly modeled also to be the main support of the whole structure. Even so, the whole piece weighed in the order of 13-stone. This is one example of where an ice carving Vodka Luge meets Art and looks simply stunning and as many students said, 'awesome and amazing'. We think they liked it!
