In Roman Mythology Cupid (in Latin Cupido is translated as "desire") is the God of Desire, affection and (dare we say) erotic love! Cupid is the son of goddess Venus and god Mars.
Cupid has come to symbolize love, romance and courtship in general. There is no greater symbol of love at a wedding than Cupid!
The story of Cupid (short version!)
When cupid's mother Venus became jealous of the princess Psyche, who was extremely loved by her subjects, they forgot to worship Venus.
Venus ordered Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with the vilest, most horrible thing in the world. While Cupid was sneaking into her room one night to shot Psyche with a golden arrow, he accidently scratched himseld with his own arrow and fell deeply in love with her.
[Cupid means " Desire", Psyche means "Soul" in Latin]
