Ice Sculptures and Vodka Luges

How We Make Ice Sculptures

Ice Block Tank image
Before we start to carve any Ice Sculpture or Vodka luge, we need to start with the raw material and that is a block of ice.

To control all aspects of the process we actually make our own ice blocks of ice. Very few companies in the UK do that!

We have ten ice-making tanks. Each tank can make two 15stone/135kg blocks of ice.

With each tank costing almost £10,000 each - it is a hefty investment!

Each block takes between 2 and 4 days to make - it's all dependent on the ambient temperature. In winter it will take a couple of days to set and in summer it can take up to 4 days.

Before we start to make a block of ice, the water we use has to be absolutely pure.
Water purity reading
a 'normal' sink water reading

If you use a Water Purity meter and test your home tap water, you will find that the reading can differ wildly even on a daily basis and of course depending on what part of the country you live in. In our part of the world (southern England) 308 parts per million is not uncommon. The ideal however, is '0' parts per million.

We manage to obtain a level of 1 to 8 parts per million on a regular basis due to our methodical and scrupulous testing. If you see a Vodka Luge or Ice sculpture that is a little cloudy or not crystal clear, the water has not been purified.

Each filter increases the purity

We go to such great lengths to get pure water for our ice sculptures and Vodka Luges that we use not just one but FOUR inline filters. Each filter increases the purity. The purer the water the clearer the block of ice.

Monitoring the purity
Once we are satisfied the water is as pure as we can make it, we fill the Ice Block tanks.

Underneath each tank are refrigeration tubes (just like your domestic fridge).

The water literally freezes from the bottom upwards. Being able to control the complete process, we are able to freeze items into the Luge that others cannot!

We are able to freeze flowers, small objects and almost anything you can think of!

We try to be innovative and different - hence our development of The Twister Ice Luge.

We are continually experimenting and trying-out new ideas.

Four days later we have created a block of pure ice. From this raw material we can then start to make a spectacular Ice Sculpture or Vodka Luge.
