FRANKENMUTH, Michigan -- Snowy roads and chilly temperatures were not enough to keep crowds from attending a popular winter event in Frankenmuth on Sunday.
Rodger Hitchcock came all they way from Sandusky, Ohio to be at the snowfest for the first time along with his friend Scott Asman, a Sandusky resident who used to live near Franknemuth and had been to the event for 11 years.
"It's a a very nice town," Hitchcock said. "Everything here is very unique. The sculptures are fantastic."
The festival featured several ice sculptures made by several teams participating in the U.S. Collegiate National Ice Carving Championship.
Snowfest Committee Chairman John Shelton said the festival had about 90,000 people attend as of Saturday.
Although Sunday was busy, Shelton said the weather kept numbers down from last year.
"Last year was a record year. Based on the numbers (Sunday), we'll be down a little bit," Shelton said.
Shelton said weather conditions Saturday also caused some other parts of the snowfest to close down.
"We even had to close the warming tent at about 9:30 last night (Jan. 28). We had about 100 people waiting outside to get into the tent," Shelton said. "That never happened before."
Chris Smith of Midland said he and his family have come to Snowfest for eight years.
"It's really good family time," said Smith.
